DEVON DREAMS WITH VICTORIA MALONEY

Jewellery designer, Victoria Maloney, grew up in Devon before studying at Falmouth University where her fascination with jewellery design began. She talks to Curated Spaces about Devon’s enduring appeal and the inspiration behind her unique collections

What is your connection with Devon and how has it inspired your career?

I grew up in Devon and moved back after studying in Falmouth. I was always drawn to the more laid back pace of life here and being by the water. My interest in jewellery design began at university, where I started re-working old pieces for friends and it has slowly evolved from here into the business as it is today. This curiosity has shaped my designs and practice over the years. The narrative and journey from raw material to finished piece is something that forever fascinates me. I think jewellery is evocative, it has a way of capturing a moment in time that can be passed down through generations, carrying those stories with it.

Where do you go for a morning coffee?

My favourite spot in Topsham is Sara’s Petite Cuisine - she does the most amazing pastries, made on site every morning. You have to get there early so you don’t miss out!

Where do you like exploring with your family?

We spend a lot of time in Salcombe as my husband’s family own an old fisherman’s cottage on the beach, so they spent many summers there growing up. We head for South Sands and like to paddle board to Sunny Cove when the weather is good. Drinks on the terrace at the South Sands hotel are always a winner - the wine is great and the views are beautiful.

If you wanted to book a table for an occasion, where would you go? What do you love about it?

I absolutely love Glebe House in Colyton - its an old Georgian Vicarage which has been converted by the family into a guest house and restaurant. The food is exceptional and locally sourced and the interiors are unique - it’s a great place to escape to.

What about a table for two?

On rare-child free evening, we will sail up the Estuary to the River Exe cafe or stroll into Topsham for seafood and fine wine at The Salutation.

What’s a pub worth driving for?

The Rugglestone Inn (Widecombe in the Moor) is our favourite place for a Sunday roast after a long winter’s walk on Dartmoor.

You’re not far from the coast, how do you make the most of it?

Nothing compares to summer in Devon - when the tides are right, we pick up a picnic from Darts Farm shop and take the boat to Dawlish Warren for an afternoon of swimming and sundowners with friends.

Where is your favourite spot for an after-work dip?

Budleigh beach can’t really be beaten year round for an evening swim

How has Devon inspired your jewellery collection?

I am very inspired by my surroundings - the Nautica necklace always makes me think of the local chandler and the fishing boats near where I live. Topsham is steeped in history and is an old trading port - it was home to some of the most famous early voyaging ships - our explorer necklace is a nod to this.

Where do you think is Devon’s most romantic spot?

You can’t help but be taken in by the surroundings in Devon. I got engaged on Branscombe beach - it is a place full of memories for us as we spent many a summer night camping out under the stars. South Milton Sands is a remote and romantic spot  and there are some stunning walks around East Prawle, where I know some of my lovely customers have popped the question. I feel very  lucky that I get to share people’s stories of these moments.

Where are your favourite wedding destinations in Devon, where did you get married?

We got married surrounded by friends at our local pub on the river, the Bridge Inn, a 17th Century malthouse followed by a party in the garden. Shilstone House in Modbury is a stunning Grade II listed Georgian Manor, which is the perfect setting for a more traditional wedding. For a more relaxed affair, The Turf Inn is a ferry ride from Topsham and has a beautiful riverside backdrop.

What do you think is Devon’s best kept secret?

Wild swimming at Dartmeet is the perfect way to escape the crowds and Ashburton with its antiques and cafes is a charming way to round off your day.
